    French, do you speak it?

Well since we have a lot of Canadians here I was wondering how well is everyone’s French?
I’m asking because I’m once again off to take a course in French this evening.
I took it at school as well as a course in University but I’m still struggling – I blame my poor teachers while I was at elementary and High school. I did well in a speaking course in university but I need to learn more since most jobs around here expect you to be bilingual.

I know little French, if I can remember it. I did German because the school's German teachers were a billion times better, the grammar is easier for me to understand and it's better.

Only problem is that my parents only go to France for their holidays. =/

I did Indonesian, as part of the national attempt at making Australian children realise that there's more than US/Europe/Australia. I now know how to say "Cow" in Indonesian and most people who I took the class with think that we should invade Asia, so it was obviously a massive success.

I wanted to do German, anyway.

You forgot to add the "I don't know a word of French" option. As the poor option is a bit optimistical for me.

Well i'm french, but i don't sound even close to a french person from Quebec. I guess i wasn't raised north enough in Ontario (Like Hearst, seriously the few people i've met from there sound like there from Quebec). And i know me and my friends don't have a french accent when speaking english either, i guess that's because unlike our parents we were flooded with english content at a younger age.

I was able to order food and ask for directions in Paris just fine, but beyond that I'm not particularly conversational. Forgot a lot since high school French, unfortunately.

With my French GCSE in a couple of weeks, I dare hope I'd be able to hold up something vaugely resembling a conversation for a while. But it would be with error and strangely focused around something resembling a syllabus... Yeah, I'm in some kinda bracket between "a little" and "handle myself". The worst thing is, within a few weeks, I will have forgotten all of it.

Ich spreche Deutsch sehr gut. Ich bekomme nur "A"s bei Grossmont College in San Diego.
Meine Fluglehrer Kommt aus Frankenreich, aber Ich kann nicht mit ihm sprechen.

Take that, everyone who wants to speak German! And FYI, the above means I can't speak any french. I can also do this.. Jeg også taler noen Norsk. Ikke meget godt, skjønt. Well, Thomas, how am I doing?

Your german sentence structure is not perfect, but you got the cases and verb transformation nailed.

Ya, I didn't feel like thinking. Structure drags me down anyway....I can speak perfectly but can't write sentences...

You speak german I take it?

And note--It is fun to flex your linguistic muscles...no general discussion is required.

I can read French fairly well, but speaking and understanding is only enough to allow me to survive in a Frech area. After a while I would quickly pick it up.

I had to learn French diction for an opera aria, so my pronunciation might seem a little off (especially certain vowels + 'R').

I have great difficulty understanding spoken French, but with a background in Latin and other Romance languages, written French is fairly easy.

    EDIT: I forgot the obligatory.

Meh, I got an A at GCSE French and a B at GCSE German with teachers who weren't very good, that was two years ago. I've never practiced since then, but last year I went to Berlin on a school trip and was amazed at the fact that I could hold my own with regards to everyday things such as asking for directions and such. Despite the fact that I was worse at German and my German teacher was worse than my French teacher. It was weird...

But all my French and German knowledge has probably disappeared now, which is a shame. I also had to learn Latin for a mandatory two years in my school, but I quickly gave it up.

I just choose "Bilinguisme" for the hell of it. My brother takes French however, doesn't like it. My second language is German. Still can't speak it well though.

Je peux parler un peu de francais.

like Psygunner, i did french (A* @ GCSE) and latin (A* @ GCSE) at school and carried on with latin till A-Level/high school level. I voted for "cant maintain a conversation in french" cos i really cant.

I can read some french, slowly. Can speak a bit, but I really can't understand any that's spoken to me.

Absolutely no french. I've done Latin for years and attempt to teach myself German and Russian. The German is progressing much better than the Russian, but I still fail at verb tenses and such.

Je ne parle pas francais, or something close to it.

Three years of french in HS and very little to show for it. I'd blame the American education system, but it's a bit of that and total indifference.

While I am certain your grandmothers would love to hear your tales of educational daring-do, I doubt many here would join them.

The next kitterling to arbitrarily mention their exam results will be banished from the thread. There are I am sure, places where a line of people may announce their starred A general secondary level education certificates: but at present this is not it.

I don't fit on that scale, and/or it's completly aritraty. When i speak Frech there's no Enlish/Other and other language accent, unles it's intentional. I can sound like a frenchman if i wanted to be and started actually talking the language again-because i haven't spoken/written/read any french in over 2 years now-, but i can read, wright, etc. So i'd probably be bilingual, if you're considering french and english only. (although i'm acutally a polygot -polylingual)

I speak French and Spanish fluently, but I really need to improve my written Spanish, it's damn rusty (for shame! It's my first language, after all!). Living in Sudan, I've also had to learn some Arabic, and I applied to start it and Russian (ab initio) at university this autumn. Language proficiency runs in the family.

I once tried learning French entirely from Asterix & Obelix comic books. Had I not given up, it would've worked.

Bah, I have enough troubles with english as it is. I barly read and speak it, and have to whip out a EtF dictionary when the "big words" appear. Personally, I don't have much interest or reason to use the language (quoique je suis canadien, wonder if I said that right ). Since I live in BC, I would have more reason to learn chinese ect because it's used more here than french.

I used to really rock at french, what with 5 years of it at School and going to france on vacation for at least 3 weeks every year when I was a kid. However, my bitterness with french grammar, the fact my family stopped going to france, that I neglected contact with my french relatives, and that I grew heavily anglophile at the end of puberty resulted in me almost losing all of my french. There was a stretch of 4-5 years where I didn't speak a single word of french for lack off opportunity and motivation.

Right now, I'm slowly getting back to my level by occasionally reading some stuff, and talking with a couple of friends that are either french or bilingual. I can currently converse fluently, though i have to ask for vocabulary from time to time, and often screw up declinations, tense etc.

Made myself *attempt* to learn it for about 8 years but never got into the trend. Can still remember most of the basic conjugation of the -er, -ir, -re verbs and a few irregular verbs here and there.

I suck at the spoken part of it though. That's what shot me down.

I only really use it so I can semi-understand what's going on in the Confrontation Website.
