    Infamous Armies

Well seeing as a was a culprit in dragging another thread off topic (right into the wilderness) i'll start this thread as suggested by Tinweasel.

What armies do you have that have gotten such a reputation that it affects your chance of getting a game.

(Note that this is not limited to those that are feared and can't find a willing opponent this side of the core systems. Store punching bags are also welcome). :fencing:

People won't play my Imperial fist 3K army. 42 termies is too much for them
On the other hand, everyone will play my Soul Drinkers.. because I can't make an armor save for my life with them! Oh the curse of being excommunicate!

No one plays aginst my Tau, since they just cant get into CC. However everyone plays aginst my IG because I have such a hard time controlling that many models.

I seem to always get a game of fantasy, but no-one seems to want to play my guard anymore.

Everyone is willing to play me, as I am willing to play everyone. Although I'm quite capable of making a list that will win easily, I prefer to build a list that challenges myself just as much as the opponent. Things such as foot slogging Daemon-bomb lists, where only 3 units start on the table, or lists that have no anti-tank except for power fists. It's a bloody challenge, it loses a few games for me, but it's a good laugh, so I'm OK with it.

That said, they'll be no holding back for Medusa V...

My Iron Warriors have developed a reputation for being the luckiest army ever, they have no CC and way to many Anti-Tank and Ordinance weapons. My Grey Knights are infamous for incredibly low rolls for shrouding.

There's a guy at my local store who always plays the 2k games with his Eldar. And he has a LOT of Star Cannons and a couple of walkers. I cannot manage to destroy his army no matter what, and I always lose. So I stopped playing him.

I just win the matches I want to win; like the ones I ahve agrudge against the opponent or the matches where I think "Wow got this far better play well".

So really people only hate playing me when they know I have something to prove, kinda makes em the worst enemy of beardy armies with players who think their army will look after itself.

One example; A friend kept bragging about his 9 lascannons and uber daemon prince in a tournament, so when I played him with my Grey Knights I thought I was screwed, I ended up massacring him in Take and Hold. Souldda seen his face.

Otherwise my armies usually end up being themed, I try to dodge making an army that people will not have fun playing against.

Black templars... i tell you, they are killers in cc. got my ass handed to me on a silver plate last time i played. guard vs BT. you would think that my shooting should have destroyed them before they got to fighting. wrong. they walked through hundreds of las, bolter and tank rounds. Then you think "last stand, how honourable!" NO. Emp's champ vs Heroic Senior officer = Dead heroic senior officer. not so heroic when he's missing his head... Terrible dice. good game. worst defeat of my life.... dead to a man

Think thats bad, my artillery marines have a really good reputation of being the stores crappest army. My missle launcher needs to be babysitted by a techmarine in order to hit, and when my techmarine commander gets hit by a basilisk, a 1 for his save always appears.
At least my Bretonnians make up for that, probably being the best Bretonnian army in the store due to me being the only one who doesn't use pegasus knights and who uses peasants. (Pegasus knights quite infamous in the store, not to mention everyone hates Bretonnians)

He gets a save against the bassy?

My kroot are feared; 142 models all being only between a foot and a foot and a half away on turn 1. All move forward, Vultures, Trackers and Hound units tie up the rest, hunters deal with chatacters.

My Tau, Traited Assualt Marines, Dwarves and even Dogs of War can't get a game to save my life.

I know it is simply because I cleaned house at a newer gaming shop in my area when I first got back here from college. I came in and in a matter of days moved through the entire "challenge board" without a scratch. Had alot of time to play back then and made it a habit to get some games in EVERY week. After a while the "regulars" decided I couldn't be beaten and have done a nice job of scaring people from playing me. Even when I show up with a new army list to try out I have to work to get a game.

Its sad but if you upset the "balance" in a shop you might have a tough time getting a game there.

I haven't been playing enough 40k to get a reputation, but lemme tell you about the current Necromunda Campaign Im in. Things have gotten wild and crazy, especially with Juves. A buddy of mine has a Delaque Juve named Tyler; so far Tyler had managed to win every single shoot out he's gone to, and has advanced further then his leader. Tyler is also incredibly lucky, as shown in several circumstances: he miraculously managed to absorb about a dozen rounds fired into him at point blank range, and was only downed for a turn before he got back up and crushed 3 guys with his powerfist. He has also survived many Plasma explosions, and when my opponent gets him in a shootout he never loses. He has also advanced to an unprecidented level of CC dangerousness in the Campaign, which is rare for Delaques. At the moment he is WS5, T4, I4, has 3 attacks, Killer Reputation, Beserk Charge, Quick Draw, and wields a powefist and an autopistol.

I have the the most OP gang in our campaign so far, and that's mostly because I got two Vents on the territory table. For non-Necromunda players, this means I can set up up to 6 models anywhere on the table above ground level. This has led to many games won, mostly due to a heavy stubber popping up and gunning down half my enemys gang.

My Heavy Plasma Gun is incredibly dangerous too; I have only had the it for three games so far, and in the three games it has vaporized over a dozen people and destroyed the objective in one shot. A dangerous piece of work, it is.

My Tau are famed for some serious firepower that others doesn't got (as most players play Space Marines and variant armies at my store) so most people choose to ally with me, but also I'm known for easily being torn apart since I got not enough Anti-3+ save weapons and got charged pretty easily since the tables are small.
    It should be changed soon.

A friend of mine has had a hard time finding games with his Mechanized Tau. And with good reason. Take this recent event for example:

Me: So how was the Texas Championship?
    Him: I won.
    Me: :insane:

He's also been in the top of our leagues and Rogue Trader tournaments.

I never have trouble finding a game, mainly cause i rarely go to a shop (the nearest is about 70 minutes away), but when i do go to one, people mistaken me for a noob marine player. I have a local gaming group with about 10 members, an they are all above average players. When i go to the shop with my friends though, they tend to get discouraged when my friend shows up with 220 models for 2000pts (Conscript IG with 4 Commisars). Once we had a Mega Battle, Me, and my two friends both with Conscript armies, against three other players who i don't know. The conscripts out numbered the other 3 armies just with 2 of them.

Everyone wants a piece of me since I play Orks. Everyone who sees me goes yeah I want to blow up some orks.

I play heavily themed armies and ussually stick with the fluff for a army. For Orks however I play however I want since anything can be orky!

    • Siren bomb armies
    • Mech Tau
    • Mech Eldar
    • Wraithlord & Starcannon Eldar
    • Godfex
    • Harlequins
    • Demon bomb armies
    • Armored Company
    • Assault-cannon heavy armies
    • Deathwing/All Terminator (it can be cheesey, but Orks and Khorne absolutely crush them)

I haven't lost a single game yet with my Mech Tau since the new Codex, but people still try and beat me

Thats a funny list, you put up a few solid but not cheese lists and left off a few of the very true power lists out there.

This pair of facts invalidates your entire list, congratulations.

Not sure if it counts, but my friends Vampire Counts scare the bajeezus out of me. Having your whole army tied into melee for most of the game while it very slowly loses is not fun...

There is a guy at my GW store that uses a 1500 point Eldar list. Originally a lot of people believed that it was a horrendous army to play and that it would massacre any opponent.

It had 3 wraithlords, 3 squads of (what are those smaller versions of the wriathlord? damn it I hate forgetting names like this) each with a warlock, Falcon, war-walker and an Avatar.

One day he challenged me to a game. Had one of my standard lists on me so i thought, "Sure I could do with the laugh of getting stomped." Battle commenced and i played to the standard Dark Angel tactic. Sit back and shoot... I lost one assault squad (it strayed too close to a wraithlord and didn't have a powerfist. Damn stubborn rule meant i couldn't even bottle it and get away) and a scout squad and the odd marine and a termie. That was it. Annihilated it.

The staff had been trying to tell him he needed a small amendment to the list. He's since listened by removing a wraithlord and adding a large guardian squad with some heavy weapon that eats through marines. Played it a few weeks ago and got the stomping i'd expected the first time. Now it's an army to fear. (For me at least)

Yes, I believe (in my limited eldar knowledge) that it was an Iyannden list and no, he didn't take transports for them. They foot-slogged their way across the table.

I'm sure this has happened to some people (I know its happened to me) and thought it would be fun to tell the stories.
Are you a :bow2: legend :bow2: at your local store/club? This is usually because of a superlative grasp of tactics, an awesome army list or the best paintjobs around. Alternatively it can be because you are absolutely terrible at one of the above.
Personally, at my school club i am known for general clumsiness, poor painting and an almost supernatural ability to roll ones for saves of any kind. Also tanks that implode on turn 1

EDIT: Woops! just found the other thread thats like this. Sorry in advance to whichever mod locks this one. I will look harder next time, i only ran a quick search.

My SMs are quickly getting used to their tanks twirling through the air on the first turn and their armour saves doing nothing. Seriously my friend collects Tau and as such if i don't get the first go my tanks don't even start their engines, in 6 games my command squad's razorback has moved once. My ability to roll ones is near legenndary. The only good luck i had against him was when the one remaining member of my bike squadron (the seargent) got to his lines and proceeded to rip through two units by himself.

I got 90% of my first turn-deciding roll are 1s.
Other than that, I'm also known for rolling ones in critical times such as shooting a Land Raider.
(Since then I called "Dice for the Dice God" before each roll, and it works)

My converted Salamanders chaplain is a madman in close combat. Fighting off the most insane odds (with nothing more that a bolt pistol as his extra wargear he took out a full brood of Genestealers on his own in close combat)

His achillies heel seems to be Tau combat drones! Whenever he gets in combat with them (even one on its own) he gets frisbee bludgeoned to death.

Also due to the many Dans at the local game club, I am known as SalamanderDan. That is the extent of my infamy

If that counts I got 2 legends as well:
    1. My 10 Fire Warriors once took down 1 (maybe 2) Wriaths in CC. For 2 times. (Though one of them get up again in WBB)
    2. My Crisis Commander with Shield Generator was able to hold in a combat with a Lictor for 2 turns, and able to take away 1 wound.
In the same game, my 4 Gun Drones killed 2 1-wound left Raveners with the causalty of 1 Drone.

If we're talking invincible army. Nothing beats Dave's Eldar.
Dave is an old friend from the portsmouth university wargaming club, now a police pursuit driver.

His Ulthwe army never lost once. Now, he's a talented wargamer but pretty much it was almost impossible to get past the near invincible shield of eldar fromage.

Since the last GT it has generally been accepted amongst tournament players such as myself, that the strongest most adaptable force you can make is the seer council, 6 starcannon guardian , 2xwraithlord +falcon +vyper army. Incredibly durable and yet with enough firepower to end the game in turn 1. Dave's usual force was a variation on this.

He now plays Night Lords and Tau, armies which have actually been beaten.

I guess you could say that my Orks fall into the "store punching bag" catagory. Its not that I always lose so much as when I do its always spectacular. As a result i'm never short of opponents.

My Wolf Lord is infamous for dropping Eldar Transports with his Stormbolter. For some reason, only he ever gets such opportunities.

This in turn prompted the development of shooty deep strike/drop pod forces which can plop down behind RA10 vehicles and open up full bore with massed S4 weapon fire, (in addition to the obligatory Melta and/or Powerfist, I'm not a moron you know). Few things anger tank commanders more than being put low by small arms fire.

In the notorious category, I believe I'm the only person in my game group who's snipers consistently roll multiple 1's on the same turn while attempting to kill Sentries. I swear, if I see one more set of triple 1's, I'm going to snap!

One of my heavy bolters is known as "That Sonuva @#^$@" at my local club

It always shoots three times, it always only hits once, but that one hit always does something huge.

My heavy bolter has taken down Terminators, Skimmers, and even a Leman Russ tank (It was shooting at the rear armor.)

I have a habit of losing the "first turn" role and then having my dreadnought explode in the first shot. I went three or four games in a row where the reveered warrior walked onto the table and walked straight off again. Grrrr. People are also eager to see my Plasma cannon devastator squad open fire. They're waiting for them to all over heat and die in a single turn... Me too if it comes to that. I think that would be really funny.

I've had a spot of trouble getting games with my necrons in the last couple of months, especially against chaos armies.

Chaos has frequently been an uphill struggle for necrons, but I've pummelled the 3 chaos players here three times each in the last 5-6 weeks. The situation escalated from a few friendly games to a tournament of sorts with all of them working together to built lists that would bring me down. I've seen some sick combos recently...One of them is still out for blood, but the other two (khorne-flavoured undivided and death guard) seem to have given up already. Having beaten an ultras player and a space wolves player.....hmm, I lost count..... probably several times in a row over the past months got me quite unpopular with them too. The only list I can get a game against is starcannon-heavy eldar, as it's the kind of army that hands my butt to me on a regular basis. Siren bomb's given me some problems occationally and I concede that I have to specialise somewhat when facing that kind of list. Oh, and a tau player that started with the release of the new codex and isn't really bothered about who or what he plays against, yet. I'm getting quite frustrated to be honest and it seems like the only remedy is to built a new army. Not that I mind a change of pace an' all, but I've lost my interest in my favourite army lately.

Having said that, most of the people here (including ones that started avoiding me recently) are WHFB vets while I'm a relative newcomer to the game, so they get to boast and brag every time they drive my blood dragons to the ground. I don't mind the comments, it's just a steeper learning curve since I'm not being brought into the game "gently".

I have a slightly legendary repeater crossbow regiment at my local store. While we had a big battle consisting of Woodelves vs the rest, that one regiment took out 15 dryads and a giant in 2 turns in [b]CC[b] loosing 1 man! I also have a reaper bolt thrower that is renowned for missing targets less than 5 inches away, but hitting everything more than 24.

I am renowned for one of the most craziest modelers in the store, and painters as i like to do heavily themed armies (plague zombies, preatorian guard etc), and they usually call me T, so i usually get kids i don't even know talking to me and they already know my name..... There was an elder player who was unbeatable in our store, he still plays, but uses a different army now, basically it had 2 wraithlords some reapers, striking scorpians, i think a wave serpeant and a few other things. He played with the list so well, that anyone who played him would be beaten.

Another guys which came to the store is Tim, he had his iron warriors in the white dwarf in aus, not sure if anyones seen it or can remember it, but he is renowned for having everything, he has forge world tanks like baneblades, and his conversions fantastic, and his army is absolutely rock hard, impossible to kill.

Unfortunatly I have gotten so familar with almost every army at my local club that I cant get a game anymore . My armies are not particularly cheesy/beardy, but I can judge Statistics very well and any fight I enter is on my terms, meaning any engagment one of my squads gets into is won by my squad. Im now in the porcess of picking up other peoples' armies, without thier army list, and just playing. No defeats so far, its getting too predictable . (8 years of playing and eventually you know stat lines off by heart and learn that the Dice Gods Do exist and like offerings of cheese and biscuits the night before a match )

Exactly what is a Siren Bomb? Is it similar to a Daemonbomb?

My Guard can't get games anymore. 2 Hellhounds, Bassy, russ, demolisher, 2 Lascannon sentinels.

Everyone wants to play my orks, noone wants to play my non-cheese IW's (simply because they are highly flexible so noone knows how ill play them).

Personally I detest going up against tau or necrons with my orks, against necrons I generally win, but its always just me removing models and then phasing him out by slowliy dropping him in CC. Against tau its just me removing models, never catching his entire army and it basically puts me to sleep.
