mods, are they worth it?

    mods, are they worth it?

Dont get me wrong, i like mods but they are not always reliable and worth it. Ive downloaded many mods and found myself re-instaling my DOW which is very annoying, even then most dont work!!! I have even found myself taking my pc to the repaip shop to fix it as it contained a bug.

What do you think about mods and are there some decent reliable websites for mods,
    cheers

ps this is my 1st thread so bear with me

The usability of mods depends very heavily on the game. On one end there are games with mods that are impractical or impossible to install, use, and enjoy. On the other there are games that are extremely mod friendly from the ground up. Oblivion, for example, is itself a mod; the entire game was built using the construction set and as such modding Oblivion is easy and powerful, resulting in plentiful and well-constructed mods. DoW falls somewhere in between, but on the friendly side of things: modding is only easy for adding new units and such, but even then it requires quite a bit of coding knowledge. So occasional bugs are probably to be expected, more if you're downloading unfinished or untested mods.

As far as advice goes, check the modding forums here and try out the bigger and older mods before the smaller, newer ones. If you have as little pc knowledge as your post implies, you might want to stick to only those mods which are well-staffed and -maintained.

There are some trully excellent DoW mods out there, most of them are easy to install. A good idea when modding DoW is to make a copy of the W40k folder before installing a new mod (I think that's what it's called, it's been a while, the folder with all the data in it) so if things go wrong you can just restore.

Most of what you're talking about IW, sounds like a case of someone not RTFM(R)-ing.

I have 20 different homeworld installs (between 1 and 2) on my comp.

Whether a mod is "worth it" is a really subjective matter.

If your definition of "worth it" is a completely polished mod on par or exceeding industry standard work, then you've a really long wait ahead.

Most mods release very rough betas of their work, which more often than not contain tons of bugs, even if they had playtesters help weed out the major ones.

But Beelzebuddy's advice is the best, until you are more familiar with mods and their quirky intricacies.

From a modders point of view, if someone has downloaded one of mine and its made them happy while providing a few good hours fun, then its worth it. Its great fun to push your limits in a way.

Personally i think mods are sometimes the best part of a game. If you look at something like the Steel Legion and SpaceHulk mod's, they offer almost a completely different aspect to DoW.

As for reinstalling DoW because of some mods, yeah, I've had to do it twice so far. But as for taking your pc to a shop because of one, I think thats more down to "user-error".

Oh God, I thought for a second that you were talking about moderators, and I was confused why the thread wasn't locked. =P

I have played a few good mods in my day, and a great many incomplete mods. Of course, there are also administrative mods like AMX in Counterstrike which really don't count because they don't add content, just control, do those count?

In that vein, I though Team Fortress Classic deserved it's own game. Though it wasn't really made by fans.

Or just look at the great success that Counter-Strike is. It's kind of hit and miss, but mostly when I look for a mod, I look for solid ideas or very very minor tweaks.
I used to have this horribly obnoxious flickering avatar, but thankfully Moe fixed it for me.

I have more than 10 DoW mods in my comp, read the Readmes, and be sure to have the latest Patch.

    Nuff said.

But well, it's not like 'm0ds, are they worth it ?' but 'XXX, is this mod worth it ?'.
    At least for me.

Ok, is it worth it.. ?

As a modder myself, I try to make everything that I am going to make as polished as a I can and as bug free.

So to anwser your question: If a mod is polished, has a good reputation of being 'bug-free' or is just plain revolutionary (night-shift ).

    Then just try it.

    P.S.

If a DoW mod doesn't work then you have the wrong version or there is something messed up in the module file.

Mods are great, and for me atleast, provide a load of replay value for games.

I was playing morrowind untill oblivion came out, because all the add-ons would give you more stuff to aspire to and more loot to find.

hell, waiting for the babylon 5 mods for homeworld, playing the beta and helping out with the star-wars mod was some of the best time I had with a video game.

mods allow user an insight into how games are put together, possibly preparing them for a job in the game/entertainment industry. IIRC doom was moddable, mapable, so moddability goes way back to the cradle of PC games.

Moddability, modder, and Modifications (TC's etc) are definatly worth it, for the player who might want to make his/her own map/mod, for the industry to raise the level of the average mapper/modder, etc. Current entertainment industry wouldn't be able to function as well as it does without mods, altohugh one company comes to mind that exploits people's willingness to get a job in the game industry *cough* *hint* *wink*

It depends on your definition of worth it. First of all, if you are gonna have to re-install your DoW game due to you doing somethin wrong each time, then no it's not.
You must know exactly what you're doing (like me) before you install mods so you're not constantly re-installing and losing all your data.

If you are lucky enough to find a really awesome, polished, balanced, fun mod, which you rarely do then it's definetly worth it, anything that adds to the atmosphere of the warhammer 40,000 universe while maintaning the 4 things I have said above then its times like that that bring a tear to your eye. When your mashing the faces of space marines on a new world with new units.... its so beautiful!!!

I didn't know mods even existed for Freelancer.

Freelancer would be long dead without them. Oh, and it's still alive?
There are lot's of them. Pity the official server for the Star Wars mod is no longer there.

I've just been playing the Rome: Total Realism mod as the Macedonians. Definatley worth it, playing as Hellenic factions in the vanilla version is so boring as there is only about 4 different units to train, much different here though. Its brilliant

Personally I won't buy a game that doesn't have a large and active mod community. It can triple or even double the replayability of a game and boost your money's worth. So what if the mods don't always work. If you've ever tried creating a mod it can be tricky business especially without support from the developers.

On a side note. The relic mod community is probably the best mod community I've ever seen and the fact that relic has even helped modders by supplying tools and how-to documentations is just plain awesome. I wish more developers shared Relic's approach. It defianately gives them a one-up as far as fan loyalty in my book.

I play a game right now, by a small game developer, that is good, but they haven't provided much mod support (none at all actually) and have even forbidden players from modifying their files. I must say that its been a real bummer and I probably won't buy from this developer again.

Trust me, don't walk into the HW boards and claim relic is mod friendly.

Best mod support i've seen is HL2/Source. Then agian, HL did start the whole mod' thing, and has the most mods, and the most played mods, online and offline.

    Mods are totally worth it.

There are mods that add new cool units to the game, there are mods that tweak the balance costs and unit damage in a quest for a better (as defined by the mod team) balance and playstyle.

The thing about mods is that you buy one game (or two, DOW and WA) and with mods suddenly you have 5 or 10 new games, with different units, different playstyles, sometimes all together in one mod.

And if you dislike a particular mod after trying it, simply uninstall it. I am amazed at how professional the mod folks got - self extratcing installs, automatic uninstalls.

Kudos to all the mod people who work to make the game better, different, fun.

    Cheers!
