    [P&M] P&M 4th Painting Competition Voting & Discussion - Lower Tier

So, we draw near the end of our 4th painting competition, which means it's time to find out who is TEH WINNAR.

The voting rules are as follows:

    1) All votes are public. That means people can see who you voted for (this allows us to prevent cheating).

    2) You cannot vote for yourself. It's just bad practice. Voting for yourself leads to 'Bad Things'.

    3) If you vote here, you also need to vote here (which is the Higher Tier voting thread).

Thats about it. You can find the images here.

I'm sure all the artists involved would love to hear your opinions on their masterpieces, so if you can, take the time to leave some sort of feedback in the thread after (or before) you've voted.

Regardless of the winner, I think we'll all agree that it's been a lot of fun, and we've learnt something new in the process.

    Good luck everyone

Givin it up to Roddy. Those guardsmen you painted look really good. I especially liek the detail you put into the scenery too. Very nicely done

Is anyone else having problems seeing the images? I can hardly vote if I can't compare them, can I?

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

Gotta give this one to ghostmaker. I really like how neatly painted the minis are, and the piece is tied together well thematically.

I voted Roddy but Chaos noob was SO F-in close I hurt me to choose between them.

Roddy gets my vote, gotta love the battle-field/Indiana Jones humor there.

I've gone with Chaos Noob, who obviousy put a lot of effort and time into his peice. Well painted, and well though out.

OOh hard choise here, I have found it quite difficult to choose between Chaos Noob's paintjob on his Oblit, and Roddy's Guardsman, both are extremely well done, Though the posture of the SM in Chaos's is a little off I do like the painting.

Story wise and attention to detail wise I would say that both are really good.

But I am going to have to go with Chaos Noob, for a fine job on your cleanliness of the painting and highlighting.

Chaos n00b's gets my vote, for a well chosen daemonic color for the Obliterator and a nice scene too.

Roddy666 - Overall a clean paintjob, with lots of little personal touches. The wallpaper, the broken glass, the severed head, bricks, wire, the lot. No shortage of interesting little details to look at, combined with an excellent paintjob on the protagonists. I think a little bit more work on the tire, and carpet would have helped, but overall, I like it.

Ghostmaker - Another great piece. I didn't realise until today that the chubby bloke was from the WHFB Brettonian range. Good use of parts, combined with the good old fashioned zombie theme, and solid urban themed base makes it very atmospheric. I think if you'd taken the highlights up on everything, it would have given it a little more pop, and the paint on the face of the Orlock ganger seems a little thick, but other than that, great stuff. I particularly like the caked on blood on the zombie (thing?), and the general posing of it all.

Cap'n Plasma - I think that, while a good concept, the overall paintjob and/or photo lighting lets this down. Conversion work looks great, and it's obvious that a lot of effort went into it. It all seems a little bland, and 'cold' though, with little in the way of contrast between the combatants. Not that this is a bad thing. With a touch more highlighting and some colour on the base, it would liven it up well, yet still keep the focus on the combatants. Overall, a solid job though, with good use of position and pose.

Chaos n00b - Easily the best work I've seen your produce so far. The paintjob is well thought out, as is the relationship between the duelists. I have to admit, I wasn't sure how your conversion work on the Oblit would hold up once the paint went on, but it looks very natural (or should that be unnatural?), so a big thumbs up there. A few issues that are quite apparent though, are the mould lines, and he lack of something textured on the base. I think a layer of sand under their feet would have been an improvement, and the mould lines sadly do detract somewhat from the piece. I do like the flame motif on the Oblit though, and the pose of the marine conveys the 'Gah! Bollocks!' look perfectly, so well done indeed.

~Deathjester~ - Sadly the pics here let you down. It's difficult to see the detail in the overall view, but from what I can see, the pose looks solid. I think the Fire Warrior could have done with a bit more colour, to define the shapes more, but the ultramarine looks solid. Some use of washes on the gold bits (notably the backpack) would have helped with the shading, but overall, it seems to be a nice piece. You've captured the 'bullet to the face' thing well.

Overall, my vote had to go to Chaos n00b. It was a combination of skill, technical proficiency and atmosphere, all of which pulled together into a great looking little duel. Congratulations everyone who finished, and regardless of who wins at the end of it, I hope we can all come away having learnt something new, or furthered our techniques.

A good idea and the converting looks great. I'd love to see some completed pictures when you finish.

Overall a good job. I love the posing and the blood effects. The broken window is a great feature and the detail modelled everywhere is fantastic. For the most part, the painting is good but there are a few areas that look to be of a lower quality than the rest. The icon on the wall, feet and one of the grenades are examples. It's not that they are bad in themselves but that the rest is so much better.

    ghostmaker
Grim and gritty. I love it. The black-lining works very well and I love the blood on the face.

The painting looks quite neat.Unfortunately, everything is a little blue. Try playing with the white balance on your camera. The posing on the kroot looks a bit awkward. This should improve with practice.

I really like the style of painting on the Obliterator. The colours look like they are glowing but the feel of the model is dark and sinister. I'm going to have to give that a try. I think the marine could be neater, though. Perhaps a slightly different technique is needed for his cleaner armour. The Marine's posing (specifically the feet) could also use some work. Other than that, it's a great diorama and the feel is just right.

You have got the neatness down quite well on the marine. The close up of the face shows the eyes really well. One thing I suggest you work on is the smoothness of the paint. You can achieve much smoother results by thinning your paint slightly with water and applying about three or four layers.

In the end, I had to choose between ghostmaker and chaos n00b. The atmosphere in ghostmaker's diorama eventually won me over.

My vote is for Chaos n00b.

Sweet conversion and GS work on the oblit - very threatening pose on him as he goes in for the kill vs. a SM who is *GASP* actually not singlehandedly slaughtering everything in sight, but in fact getting wtfpwned himself. The paint job is very chaotic. Only downside is the rather blah base.... needs some sort of basing (on the base), rubble, sand/gravel and a few different colors, something neutral to break up all that black. Well done bro.

Tough choice for me, but my vote goes for Chaos n00b. That obliterator is just...disgusting (but in a good way!).

    Great job everyone!

I've voted for Chaos n00b - I like the way you've conveyed the space marine's reaction in the duel ("oh crap, I'm dead"). The paintjob's really good too, nice work

All the other entries are nice as well, I really had to think before voting due to the poses and atmosphere in each duel. Well done all

Well, if I'm not mistaken, the poll's run for a week. Is Ap0k going to formally wrap things up?

Just want to say thanks to everyone who entered and everyone who voted. My entry was by far the best thing I've ever painted and I still wonder how I did it. Certainly not wihtout the help of this community.

Roddy666's entry got my vote - I think the posing was good, the impending attack by the traitor(?) Guard is pretty obvious, and the detail work on the background is nice. I also like the (subtle) reference to one of my favorite quotes from a movie in the piece's title - was the reference from The Untouchables intentional? *shrug* I think the painting and the attention to detail was good - if it was to be redone, though, I think the whole thing could benefit from the subtlety of thinned highlights as everything looks a little stark, but that's just me.

Ghostmaker's entry is a good piece of work and the conflict is evident, but I think some of the posing's a little off, at least from the pics - the Guardsman's head could've been turned a little more IMO. So far as the painting, I preferred Roddy's at least in terms of the highlighting and shading - all the shadows in this entry go to pure black, even on the skin, and the highlights are minimal (at least from the pics.) I do like the blood effects, though! Very realistic color and spattering, IMO.

Cap'n Plasma's entry is good, with good posing and great interaction with the scenery. The real downfall IMO is two-part: the highlights don't really extend to the scenery so much (the sandbags, for example) and the blue tint from the fluorescent lighting kinda cut out all the color from the figures - a real problem given that the Kroot itself is blue and that makes it hard to see detail.

chaos n00b's work is definitely a solid all-round piece of conversion and painting. I preferred Roddy's entry, though, primarily for the posing - I think it would've been much more effective if the guns had been leveled to face the Marine. While it's pretty obvious that he's been backed or thrown against the large pipe, there doesn't seem to be a lot of interaction between the figures themselves. As for the painting, it's definitely some solid work - there's a few areas pretty visible in the pictures, though, where shading was overlooked and stuff could've benefitted from lining-in or thinned washes or something just to tidy up certain areas (like the close-up of the flames where they meet up with the trim on the leg, the holes in the Marine's armor which IMO just aren't dark enough, or the joints between the wrappings on the Obliterator.) That being said, though, the conversion work from the original unpainted fig is pretty solid and the GS work is excellent. I think the metal on the SM's backpack is great looking (actually the backpack overall, let's say) and the highlighting and colors are definitely a step up in skill - giving credit where credit's due. The obliterator scheme is disgusting, and rightfully so!

~deathjester~'s entry shows some good conversion work and posing - it's pretty convincing with the Tau being shot and recoiling backwards. Unfortunately, a few areas where the painting looks like it could've been neater (the gold from the should pad trim spilling onto the blue, a lack of shading on stuff like the SM's mouth grill, etc.) and the smallness/lack of detail of the pics kinda take away from what could've been a serious contender IMO.
