For what it's worth i'd say no thanks to steam.
I don't really know why either. I guess it's got something to do with the fact that i'm getting to be an old guy now. I still buy vinyl records, hardcopy magazines, books. I like the idea that i own it not rent it. There is a place you can go where you can meet real people who value your ongoing custom and have the same interests without it costing you money every month. It's an irrational fear of what *might* happen maybe. Like a Phillip K Dick novel. All your electrical devices are spying on you. Waiting to catch you thieving. You wake up one morning and nothing works anymore and there is no way to get in touch with anyone who can sort it out. Just a machine that doesn't care it messed up and cannot be reasoned with. Plus it's yet another place that has your financial information and identity. i can play CoH in a DMZ no worries 'cos there's nowt worth stealing and i can wipe my PC and reload everything in an few hours atm. |

The thing that gets me about Steam is not the service they provide; it's very nice and handy for a lot of people (personally I just prefer a hard copy though), but that Valve will probably eventually go out of business or get bought by another company; shit happens. And when Steam does eventually go down (which it will) you won't be able to get your games. Maybe they'll allow you to back them up before then, but IMO I'd rather have a hard copy that I don't have to remember a login/password for and I can just put in a safe place.
note: I like the actual Steam service. I like the way all my Valve games/mods are in one place, I can access the servers, and browse new titles. But I just don't want to buy stuff from them. I got X3 and Red Orchestra retail because I like my hard copy. |

I like Steam for the most part and find it extremely easy to use....when all is well. I've wondered if CoH would ever be delivered via their network and quite frankly, hope it's not.
I use Steam every night to play DOD:S and 360 days a year it works great. But on those nights that it doesn't, it sure is nice to have CoH a double click away. |
