[Homeworld 2] QUICK FIXES HERE! READ THIS FIRST

HOW TO USE THIS FORUM:

1. Before you post, see if there's a thread about what you want to post about already. Use the search function for this, or scan through the thread topics. You may also note that a similar bug could be found in the demo bug forum also. The HW2 Demo is based on the Gold version of Homeworld 2. Any bugs in the demo will likely be in the full version.

2. Please read the README.TXT (second post in this thread for your convience). Now includes 1.1 Patch Improvement Info.

3. I cannot say this enough. MAKE SURE WINDOWS IS FULLY UPDATED AND YOU HAVE THE LATEST VIDEO CARD DRIVERS (at least 44.03 for Nvidia cards, 3.6 Catalysts for ATI)! If you can't get into the game, or crash out of it, seriously, check your drivers. More Info from Relic. See this article on ATI (which links to MS), for an explanation of WHY you should patch windows for graphics related crashes.

4. Install the Homeworld 2 Version 1.1 Patch

5. If you have an issue with a SP Mission check this MTL2 thread.

6. Video and Framerate Problems? Check out some of these threads from Relic before posting:
7. If you are going to post:
  • Start with an introduction of what you think the problem is.
  • Then post a detailed description of the problem, and how/when it occured.
  • Follow that up with your HW2.log file (in c:\program files\sierra\Homeworld2\bin\release by default).
  • If you crash, there may/should/will be an error log from the time of the crash, post that as well if you have it.*
  • Finally, post what you've tried to do to fix the situation so far.
*The hw2.log and error.txt file from the time of the crash are a pair. Both need to be posted together.

LIST OF KNOWN ISSUES With Fixes/Answers/workarounds:

See also the MTL2

1. Intel Integrated Graphics

2. Matrox Parhelia Cards have no ship textures - Matrox knows about the problem.

3. Installer does not allow you to install the game - Workaround.

4. Random Crashes to Desktop With Dual Monitors - Disable one monitor.

5. Error: Unable to start OpenGL - Matlab Server running, preventing OpenGL from Starting.

6. Could not load the DLL library d:\dll4wise.dll - Windows 98 Original Edition only so far.

7. Banding in backgrounds - No the textures aren't 16 bit.

8. AGP Programs hang on Win2K systems with Athlon Processors - Thanks Remy

9. Horrible Framerates with ATI+FSAA+Shadows - With Workarounds, thanks Remy.

LIST OF KNOWN ISSUES Without Fixes:

1. Battle Chatter Issues - Low levels of Battlechatter + Low battlechatter setting = high (unconfirmed by a second party) + Erroneous Battle Chatter (Ships report victory when a ship moves out of sensor range). This seems to be largely depending on Personal Preference.

GAMESPY RELATED

The biggest problem with Joining and Hosting on Gamespy is properly applied Router/NAT/Firewall Settings, check your readme.txt (or the second post in this thread) for more info on ports etc. There is also this thread which provides more help and a place for discussion. Note: 999 Pings are caused by not configuring your ports.

1. How to use Colour in Gamespy - A bug, but a fun one.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

1. Alt+Focus is Broken!! - Feedback from Relic

2. Add a game timer to HW2 - Modding at work.

3. Listing of Keyboard controls - By dyntheos and others.

4. Frigates to weak, battles too fast? - read this for clarification from Relic.

**** WARNING IF YOUR POST DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION FOR A PROBLEM, IT WILL BE DELETED ****

Non-standard Resolutions

Homeworld2 has been designed for the standard 4:3 aspect ratio display.
However, you can use other any unsupported resolutions of your choosing,
such as those listed below. Furthermore, We have included a solution for
some non-standard resolutions as listed below. If you're running Homeworld2
on a laptop or other LCD display, you may experience some distortion or
stretching of the game screens if you're not running in the recommended
resolutions for your specific monitor.

To address this, we've included the following work-around using a command
line option switch. In order to specify the resolution that you want to play
Homeworld2 in, use the following parameters to set your resolution. Simply
cut and paste from the text below into the Homeworld2 shortcut Properties

For Example, the Target of your windows shortcut should read:

C:\Programs\Sierra\Homeworld2\Homeworld2.exe.

And if you want to run Homeworld2 in 1024 x 768 resolution, using the
following command line switch (typed exactly as):

-w 1024 -h 768

(**note the case sensitive and space sensitive nature of this command line
switch where
-w sets the width value and the -h sets the height value.)

Therefore, if you want to run Homeworld2 in 1024 x 768 resolution, the
'Target' field of the Windows shortcut for Homeworld2 should read:

"C:\Programs\Sierra\Homeworld2\Homeworld2.exe" -w 1024 -h 768

You can try using this method to run in any one of the resolutions listed
below or others that may not be listed. However, none of them are guaranteed
to work in all cases. Here are several examples. Simply cut and paste from
the text below into target line after the .exe portion of the existing text.

1152x864 -w 1152 -h 864
1920x1440 -w 1920 -h 1440
2048x1536 -w 2048 -h 1536

III. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES
----------------------------

i. Multiplayer Issues
Modem users may experience connectivity problems when playing Homeworld 2 on
Gamespy while running a personal firewall (such as ZoneAlarm or Norton
Personal Firewall). Disabling the firewall during play may solve those
problems.

If you want to play a multiplayer game of Homeworld 2 and you are behind a
router, you may need to do one of the following:
a) Disable your router so that your machine is connected directly to the
internet.
b) Unblock port 6073 and ports 2302 to 2400 (these are the default
DirectPlay ports used by Homeworld 2).
c) Force Homeworld2 to use a given port number by using "-port ####" at the
command line, where #### is between 1 and 65535.

If you still encounter difficulty in connecting to GameSpy, please allow
traffic for at least the following TCP ports.
6667 (IRC)
80 (HTTP)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6500 (incoming, UDP, default roomquery port; can be customized with
roomqueryport=<port #> in svc.cfg)

ii. Dual Monitor Setup
You will not be able to play Homeworld 2 on your secondary monitor unless
both are running from the same supported video card. If you have two video
cards, the primary card must be supported by Homeworld 2 or the game will
not run.

iii. Troubleshooting
You may experience various display problems depending on your system
specifications. Below are the current known issues.
a) Alt-Tabbing out of and back into Homeworld 2 may cause certain ships to
render improperly.
b) Homeworld 2 does not run on Windows 98 SE systems that use CMI 8738
Onboard Sound Card. Playing with a different sound card or by disabling
sound entirely (by using the -noSound command line parameter) will allow the
game to run.

IV. GENERAL GAME ISSUES
----------------------------

i. CD Keys
Please remember, no one from Sierra will ever ask you for your key. If
someone logs onto GameSpy using your CD key while you are in a GameSpy lobby
or game, you will be kicked out.
Remember, do not give out your CD key to anyone or you will not be able to
play multiplayer games!

ii. Graphics Settings
Homeworld 2's default graphics quality settings are set to low. If you want
to experience the full visual experience of Homeworld 2, you will need to
set these values to high.

iii. Installation of DirectX9.0
Homeworld 2 requires DirectX9.0 or higher in order to run. You will be
prompted to install DirectX9 during the installation process. If you have
already installed or want to install DirectX9 later, please select no.
Note: If you select no during the installation process, you must install
DirectX9.0 manually before Homeworld 2 will run.

iv. Gamespy Arcade
While Homeworld 2 provides Gamespy Arcade as an optional part of the
installation process, Homeworld 2 is not supported by it. If you want to
play a multiplayer game on Gamespy, please select the GameSpy option
provided in the front end.

v. Content Download
Unique player Badges must be placed in your bin/profiles/badges/ directory.
Badges downloaded from other players will be placed in this folder as well.

Levels will be downloaded to your bin/profiles/levels folder and be placed
in a folder with a unique id. If you want to host a game with a downloaded
map, please ensure that you copy it to your
data/leveldata/multiplayer/deathmatch/ folder

New 1.1 Features - Explained

Multiplayer Improvements:

1. There is now a "Supress" Checkbox in the Gamespy chat window above the player list which shuts off the Join/Part messages of people entering and leaving the channel. This is on by default, and its setting is not saved when exiting the game.

2. There is now the ability to ignore a user in the gamespy lobbies. To ignore a user, click on the icon to the left of their nick in the players list until they are crossed out. This setting is saved when you exit the game.

3. You can now have "Virtual Channels" or "Group Chat" in gamespy lobbies. To use this feature, click on the icon to the left of a person's name until you see it change to an icon with two heads chatting. This indicates that the player is now in your virtual channel. To send to your group, change the chat button toggle below the players list to the icon with the one head talking to many. The group list is saved when exiting gamespy.

4. You can now autocomplete names, making it easier to whisper to players (as in Homeworld). Type / then start typing their name. For example, typing /u would autocomplete any nicks starting with U, for example, UberJumper. If there are multiple nicks starting with that letter, type the next letter in their nick until the nick that you want autocompletes. This does not work in a game setup screen (hopefully to be fixed if there's a 1.2).

5. In conjunction with the "Virtual Channels" you can use the /group alias to send to your selected group. This prevents having to toggle the chat button to group mode. This does not work in a game setup screen (hopefully to be fixed if there's a 1.2).

6. For use in the Game Setup Screen, there is now a /team alias, to send to people on your team. This should also work in game.

7. The game now saves a .stats file with the game statistics in it. This can be located in your \bin\profile1\stats directory. Open in notepad.

8. The game will now save your settings for map and players (CPU) in both Skirmish and Multiplayer. You can use the "Reset Defaults" to restore the game defaults.

9. There is now a random race selection in the game setup screen. This will allow players or CPU to have a randomly selected Race before the game starts.

10. Lobby Chat is now saved in a buffer when you join or host games. You will not lose track of conversations when you join or host. In addition, it will not lose track if you toggle between the game chat screen and the lobby chat screen when in a game. Also, if you host, and exit the game, you will not lose lobby chat. If you join, then exit a game, you will lose lobby chat (missed in testing, will hopefully be fixed if there's a 1.2 patch).
