Opinions on console systems?
I've never owned a console, but lately since the prices have dropped under to the $179 US range, I have been toying with the idea of getting one. (like I really have time to play more games than I do now)
Anyway, which would be the better way to go----Xbox or PS 2 ? It seems to me that more Xbox games find their way to the PC like Halo or Morrowind. Would it be best to let your choice of systems be driven choice of games, or driven by which is the best overall system? If you were going to buy right now, whch way would you go? |

Let your decision be made by the choice of games available on a system. After all, the whole point of a console system is to play games. Why buy a console system that doesn't have any games that appeal to you? Go for the one that has the most games that you think you'd want to play. I'd also like to mention that there's a third console that you forgot, and that is the GameCube. :P

Spec-wise the X - Box is miles ahead of the PS2, but hasn't fulfilled its potential yet in terms of the class of games it produces. However, mid-term, ie; 3 - 9 months, it will come into its own. From then on, I can't really comment, because the PS2 is bringing out some sort of bolt on hard drive extension and its online gaming will be way underway.
As Mok says, decide on the basis of its games. If you like Halo and such, go for the X - Box, but if you're more of an arcadey/sporty type with a passion for beating your mates up without actually going to their house, then choose the PS2. I don't think you can lose either way but also take into account the consoles your mates use, as there's not much point in stealing Vice City if you have an X- Box. |

I forgot to mention that I will probably only be interested in the single player aspect of any game, and since my wife doesn't care a bit about games, there is no one play against at home.
I like most any types of games except sports and those Mario Bros/ Donky Kong cartoon character types of games. I know everybody raves about Halo, but then aren't they supposed to port it over to the PC pretty soon. |

Yea halo rocks, and it is comming to pc I think its august or september, I dunno the exact date.
Between my friend, who works for MIDWAY on the Mortal Kombat team, and his brother they have every system. I've played MK: DA on them all, he gets the version very cheap. It does look the best on the XBOX, but they are all really too close to tell. Yea I have an xbox, and I like most of the games on it, the only thing is that Playstation is a sony product, so there are alot of the asian titles that are ONLY comming out in it, such as FFA, and most of the capcom games. So like the guys above said, just look at the games you want to play, and go on from there. |

I'd go PS2, but that's because I like all the beat-everything-to-a-bloody-pulp-with-your-bare-hands-or-perhaps-a-melee-weapon-of-some-sort games that come out for it. Personally I think Kingdom Hearts and the Dynasty Warriors series are worth the price of admission by themselves.

i personally think u should stick with a comp. comps have better graphics, ram, all that good stuff, and is upgradeable. most good games for consoles are ported over to it soon
but i would recomend the PS2 mainly for the games. or i would wait for the PS3 which i heard was coming soon |

Nintendo games are going downhill fast. The moment they made Zelda a 3d third-person over-the-shoulder game it was ruined. Starfox has been ruined even more than when it was remade for Nintendo 64. 3D Mario games are a travesty. The only Nintendo-exclusive game in recent memory that I liked was Conkers' Bad Fur Day. That game was hilarious!
X-box has awkward controllers and a dearth of good games. If I were you I'd go with PS2, if only because you've got a huge library of PS1 games that you can nab for cheap and play on your PS2 in addition to your selection of PS2 games. |

very tough to say i would get X Box because it is way ahead of the competiton and it has a computer style to it. u can jerk out ur spare hard drive in ur computer and put the X box in. Or u can put DVDs and other games onto its memeory. He he its a trixed out X Box (finally micrososft did something good) :3d:

I have a PS2 at home and a ton of games that are just awesome. I just got the gamecube for zelda, super smash bros, metroid and ikaruga and Soul Calibur 2 in August (the GC version has the best special character).

cube or PS2, the box does just feel like a PC in a box, the only thing that looks to be coming for it is fable which isn't out until some time in 2004
the PS2 has more games than the other two put together and when the developers get their act together it can look beautiful. it also gets strange games like ico, rez, amplitude etc that just wouldn't get released on other consoles. the cube basically has nintendo games, monkey ball and ikaruga which are all things i want (now i just need a job/sudden influx of money so i can get one) |

never owned a console, and am a hardcore pcgamer, but i recommend the PS2 (blasphemy), since i have played it the most.
PS2 has the most number of big long single player games, final fantasy for example. Xbox is pretty good but the PS2 has more and better games. |

Go with the PS2. Plenty of fantastic games to keep you busy for weeks.
X-Box has potential, but only has a few decent games. Not to mention the fact that it's freakin' huge (the controller is the size of a Dreamcast if i'm not mistaken). |

I got a gamecube, it is the only system with games on it I'll never see on the PC and WANT to own and play.
Metroid Prime is awesome beyond reason, the attention to detail and little things they included make it the superior to all other FPSs yet made (IMHO). It has to be seen to be believed. That said, take Mokona's advice, look at all the system's games and decide which one has more of what you are looking for. Only you can decide which system is best for you. Don't buy a system based on what someone else says you will like. You might even try to rent each of the systems and play some of the games you are interested in before making a final decision. I'm sure there is somewhere in your city that rents systems for home use. |

I dunno what you guy consider awkward, but having played pretty much every console from the Odyssey II up (and mashing around on Tron and centipede and all those other "odd" controler setups in the early 80's arcades
Goldeneye for the N64 was one of the best shoot-yer-pal FPS's ever, but playing with the N64 controller was torture for us computer geeks used to mouse-precision. Halo plays like a dream on the Xbox controller, you can do all the classic PC moves (like jump, spin, and blast yer friend in back of head)... you can even 10X snipe a moving target from across the map. The original controller was a bit, well, huge... but the S variant is a perfect fit. The GC controller is nice, a bit odd, but damn the PS/PS2 controllers are ugly. Anyways... back to original question... for single player experience, it's gotta be PS2. Most of the early games sucked, but they're stepping up. Of course, it's supposed to be one of the hardest systems ever made to program for :P, so Xbox games have higher potential... and the Xbox live is gonna be big, so not having friends living close isn't a problem... but then, we have computers for online play already ![]() |
