Jaguar Desert [Download link - first post]
Its been a while since I have created anything for Dawn of War. I must admit the passion can die sporadically, but new ideas eventually warrant the re-install of the Dawn of War tools.
Dark Crusade single player campaign is set on a desert planet called 'Kronus'. But the majority of maps are winter or jungle terrain and the only map that seems to represent Kronus is a 4 player map called 'Janus Savanah'. .... IDEA ![]() Over the past month I have been working on a massive 8 player desert themed map @ 1024x1024. I'm going to guess that if your computer does not reach the recommended specifications for Dawn of War Dark Crusade, then you may not be able to enjoy this map. I have used close to 4000 decals and over 4000 objects placed. ![]() I may need to have this map tested before I can release it to the public. I will need a rough description of which computer setup would be the absolute minimum. 24 November Here is the download link for Jaguar Desert, please remember that this map is compatible with Dark Crusade only. Any comments on the map are welcome. Although I am really interested in the performance of your computer. Edit: Finaldeath: I've put up a mirror of this file on my site. Download it here: http://dow.finaldeath.co.uk/ Last edited by Finaldeath : 8th May 08 at 5:16 AM. |

4000 decals and object, at last a detailed map !!!
this desert is going to be my favorite hunting ground, i love this name's place Knowing your precedent mapping work Sheath i'm waiting for this map with great anticipation. It will be a real pleasure to pratice my predator instinct on a rich detailed environement even if it lags like hell. (this way i'll have time to look at the lizards taking sunbath on the rocks...) |

I rarely see a map that I just think wow, I really want that map, especially now most of my playing revolves around me play testing mods so you guys can have them. But this map, wow, just wow, I want it now!
![]() There's only been one other map that i've wanted this bad and that was the map with the odd whale type custom object. Don't think it ever got released. Since I don't know how long it might be till you have this done I would like to request a PM when its finished. Only if you can bare in mind. I don't want to say you have to. |

Detail is exactly what I was looking for in the development of this map. I like long battles on huge maps and I really wanted to bring out the best in every area of this huge 1024x1024. And after not creating anything for a while, I thought it would be good start to bring myself up to speed again with the dow tools. AshaD You are in luck with this map. I have completely balenced it out so that every player gets equal access to resources. Each player starts an equal distance away from each other so early rush would be risky. The map is designed in a way that allow plenty of opportunities for setting up an ambush. The relics are positioned in the middle of the map, so you'll have to do the hard work first before you can justify your victory with the relic unit. Quote:
Do you mean this? No it did not get released, I put the mod to sleep for a while during a real life crisis.... however, I'm back to pick up where I left off. I've been working on a new map that has a forge world theme to it. The pics below are an early view of a tank shed, of course this is just a section of the building to a tank factory that I have planned. There will be more to come but I think this will be an opportunity to revive an old thread. ![]() If Imperial Guard ever find them selves on the verge of pawning the enemies of the imperium with just infantry alone, they will have a place to store there mighty Baneblade ....errr what did I just say?! Anyway, back on topic. My computer is a 'beast' weighing in at Core 2 Duo Processor E6700 with an Nvidia 8800GTS. I have NO problems running....anything. So I turn to the DOW communty, anyone with a comp that runs at anything less than the above. I would be very grateful if you could offer to test 'Jaguar Desert' for me. I'm looking people with celerons and early AMD 64 processors. If you are willing to help then please pm me. Thanks for the comments Sheath |

I think as long as the object files are included and installed with the map, it won't be a mod. DOW only checks certain RGD files when playing online to make sure everyone is playing the same version. The map and it's objects come after the fact, if they don't modify existing DOW units and structures, it should drop right in. Excellent looking map BTW. My only criticism is in the 3rd screenshot the sand/dirt looks a bit flat (pool table flat). I only mention it because everything else looks really organic and, well.. desert like. |

Sheath, would you be willing to upload it to www.yousendit.com? I can't download from the site you posted it on, for some reason. Something about no download traffic for my country (USA).

Thank you for the interest in this map. I would love to know the frame rate of the map during gameplay. Fraps is a decent program for getting this kind of information.
hangar-8, you are correct, the map project I have been working on is by no means a 'mod'. You can install the files to the DXP2 folder without breaking online play. However, a turn of events for future development has forced me to add the project to it's own mod folder (I have more drastic plans )Quote:

sweet. thanks. I use FRAPS a lot so I'll fire it up and see what kind of fps I get.
EDIT: Just finished a game on the map. Here is the replay . You will need the Firestorm beta since that is the mod I played it with. Thoughts: POSITIVE Absolutely lovely map. Nice open feel to map. Lots of maneuvering possibilities. Lots of room for base building. NEGATIVE Could use some cover, either in trees or wadis (dry river beds) I'm not a fan of the load screen. I'm a snob who hates most Photoshop filters applied to screen captures. About the frame rate: In very active areas (lots of effects) I was averaging 25fps. When not much was going on I was getting 60fps. I have a decent amount of video memor (512mb) and a decent card (7950GT) so the textures weren't giving me any problems. Oh, I should mention I was playing with 7 AI using the Firestorm's custom AI which takes some serious processing power. I'd try the map out on Vanilla but I'd gag and die before I finished it. I *love* this map. I'll have to try it on my friends computer which is older. If it runs fine on his then I'll be playing it with him. Last edited by Ira Aduro : 2nd Dec 07 at 7:13 AM. |

ok it's definitively a map. No custom object in this huge desert.
Beautifull map very high detailed and realistic feeling of a desert. 1024x1024 maps are way too big but very fun to play on !! For a 4vs4 human players its ok, just pray that your opponent doesn't choose to play a sneky eldar and build gate all under each stone ! I add this map to Black fortress for some Desert Hurricane Lan parties at home, As frot eh lag : it was not a problem for me and my settings were only on medium, i will try to play it on hight to see what it gives. Some issues about the pathing but nothing critical. good map. |

I'll see what I can do before I send the file to filefront.... however feel free to edit the map yourselves and distribute/host it to anyone you wish. Thanks for the comments and support Sheath |

Sheath, I've just been battling on your map with three AI (2x2). It is a wonderful creation. I love big maps and long battles. Thanks a lot.
I was wondering, have you made other maps for DoW? I couldn't find anything, but the quality of this map strongly suggest that this isn't your first. If you or anybody else could point me to other maps by Sheath I'd be very grateful. |

I`ve been looking for a nice big deserty map for the weekly lan session, and just stumbled over this thread. If anyone has this map could you possibly upload it somewhere.
It`s not on dow files, and obviously all the free hosting links have expired. Thanks. |
