Homeworld 2 File Format Specs Request
Is there any way Relic can release the file format specs for the major HW2 filetypes (HOD, ROT, MAD etc) as happened with HW1 (PEO, LIF, MAD etc)?
I think it is fair to say that this is hampering the modding community somewhat with their tool development and one would hope this is something the devs would know like the back of their hand by now and should be readily available (even if it is in the format of C++ type definitions). Please? |

hrmm.. while critical pep, saddly appearing semi true.. there is little word out of relic on anything which makes it frustrating.. Mecha does his best but all we know there is he's trying to get us more documentation.. <shrugs> but again this would help those who are working get us tools we can use.

You could assume that pep, or you could assume that we're working on solving as many problems as we can within the very frustrating constraints, unfortunately that involves a lot of delays and silence.
hmm, I guess that is "setting straight" |

lol, I'm sorry, I posted that because I just had this feeling it would get your attention
![]() I feel sad that the only thing that seems to get your attention atm is if one of us says something you don't agree with or get irritated by! I abused this observation. I know you are busy Relic/Mecha, I'm well aware of that fact but many of these threads asking for information, where a simple "were thinking about doing just that" or a "maybe on the furure" would be more than sufficient, are simply unanswered (or ignored as it appears to many I've talked with off board and who have posted in the thread). Some examples: http://forums.relicnews.com/showthr...&threadid=20837 http://forums.relicnews.com/showthr...&threadid=20512 The fact is this, a lot of us who have posted in this thread are now feeling like we are either being deliberately ignored or relic is simply uninterested in supporting us due to the lack of replies. Being busy doesn't cut it, other threads with questions involving more complicated answers have been replied to. Most of the people in this thread are the very people that would save you a lot of time by developing and supporting tools for the community. Something that could save youselves a lot of work. All it would take is telling us you're aware of our questions. Use us or loose us. I know I'm rapidly loosing interest in HW2 modding, as are a few others I've spoken to. I think you missed my point, it's not a case of being too busy with other things (although I am, I've not been assinged to homeworld 2 since mid August). It's also not a case of us not caring or toying with you as you seem to think. We are well aware that there are big problems both with the game and with the modding facilities, no doubt you believe we want people to have to pay 3000 dollars for an our of date copy of maya. Read my post again. Quote:
Silence because there is very little that is certain right now, promising anything will very likely cause more problems, witness the endless threads about how we betrayed the mod community by slipping the RDN release... Silence also because saying almost anything outside certain very tight parameters will probably get us in trouble. Maybe you are familiar with contracts and intellectual property ownership? p.s. I'd rather not loose you, things may fall out. |

Mecha, we all love you.
Thank you for continuing to support us even though you're not getting paid to. We understand that the property rights cause problems. Trust me, I've been there. I can do without the HOD ref, as I think I've got it all figured (at least the important bits). But an NIS ref is what we really need. Again, thank you for your faultless and selfless contributions to this community. You are a saint. -Philip "Pip" Kin |

Contracts = Horrible things slapped on by money wanting pains in the ass's, commonly with a NDC or in it's long form Non Disclosure Cause.. meaning that while mecha would love to be able to just say were doing this and this and this if he did he'd loose his job and we'd be whimpering.. ???
Also the problem that sierra 'owns' hw2, while it's relics Intellectual Property Sierra owns the rights to the game meaning everything you do has to go through them and they can really slow you down. (isn't expecting an answer to that one due to point above and contacts). Can understand the silence but at the same time it's frustrating for us mecha i'm not even one of those who can make the apps but i do some what understand the code for the lua and the system once i've seen something working enough to trace it back and try and modify that code.. we all know that relics not out to make us buy a 3000$ software package we can't even get anymore otherwise you'd have slapped a nice sticker on the game saying 'backed by MAYA' lol but there and most of us are frustrated because we Can't do anything.. pip, spooky and the like are working there butts off to decode stuff that they all know relic has to have the information for and would cut all that down 10 fold, yet... they can't get that information.. Now that is not exactly relics fault.. and that is the part that makes it even more frustrating, with HW1 and the like most of the stuff if i understand it right had been relics property so you guys could easyly give us info once you got it to a point where it worked, with HW2 you have Sierra, big corporation that is sitting there going.. hrmmm tell us why we should give this out for free? Why not market it all as a seperate package? and make MORE money, were not paying you to give away this stuff are we??? and generally making people upset at you guys instead of them beacuse of a sheet of paper called a contract... Then Relic because they don't want to cause more problems doesn't answer the questions because to answer the questions means to give something that could never happen and this could cause more people to be upset at you and of course this leads to silence rather then anything else and this causes people to get upset because they don't understand the problems..... Silence is I guess what were gonna have to live with, because you guys can't do anything else.. as for the 'betrayed' no, i've backed you guys from the start on that i've said it looked unfinished to me it does it's like you guys didn't get a chance to put everything in you wanted but at the same time your doing your best which is why I get peeved when people accuse you guys of not keeping your word.. see the 1. am i upset 2. but etc posts i normally do. Just hoping you might be able to help us out some time soon that's all. |

Mecha I did not miss your point, but you did miss mine. We're not asking for promises about releaseing this and that etc.. what we are asking for is feedback of any form, even if it is to say "Sorry, we can't discuss this due to IP" or "We are aware of your interest, but now is not a good time to discuss this".
Anything aslong as we know that you have been reading and our aware of us. I'm entirely aware you have contractual obligations and you can't talk about a number of things. But, those obligations don't prevent you telling us that you can't talk about something - that is much better than simply not posting as that leaves us with doubt, and there is a lot of that currently. So, we arn't asking you to give us anything material, all we need is to be reassured you do listen to us, even if there is nothing you can do to help at that time. I believe we have finally got the answer we all wanted, you do notice us - unfortunately it took me being hostile to get this reply. It shouldn't have needed that - that is the point. I hope I wrote that eloquently enough.....I'm half asleep. Quote:

I think we'd all be grateful for a little more feedback, but like you say, you're very busy. It's appreciated that you're here though.
A question does arise though, Mecha. If you're not assigned to HW2 I guess you're here because of simple interest in the game and community. Nice one! But - is there ANYONE assigned to do PR or simply go through the forums and post on important topics? If not, can there be someone please? With forums as large as these I know not every little question can be answered, but (and I don't want to sound rude to fellow boarders here) there are generally different classes of us - those who watch, those who do etc. It might be an idea to begin the process of RDN lvl2 (or even RDN lvl 1.5!!!) to distill the community down to a small band who are developing tools, data sets etc for the wider community to use, and they can then pass on this learning to everyone else. Well, I hope that makes sense, and if you're still reading this - can we have a look at some HW2 file specs? |
