[Commission] Ultramarines Sniper Squad
A sniper squad for the large ultramarines commission I'm working on. No major conversions, just greenstuff hoods. They've since had a thin layer of putty over the top of the greenstuff to smooth it a bit. The heavy bolter guy will also have a camo net hide stowed on his back, but that will be added after painting.

Might I request a possible tutorial on the camo? Even just a bullet list of the colors and order of layers? It really is sublime and I might like to steal it for my Crimson Fist scouts.
Hell, I might consider revising my old school stormtroopers a bit like the way you handled the heavy bolter scout, (beats the dingy, wool, bedroll look I originally painted their pack rolls) |

Actually it's pretty easy... but time consuming!
Basecoat of catachan green (I used VMC 095 US green) Squiggles in Khemri brown (I actually used VMC 134 USA tan earth) Do the squiggles by randomly drawing a '6' in various orientations and flips. Space em out a bit. Now, between each '6' continue the tail in a meandering curve to meet a nearby 6. Try to avoid small closed circuits. Thicken up the lines till they look nice. Apply an allover wash of devlan mud. I personally would skip this for future attempts as it'd also cut the next stage... If the dark line is desired, perhaps basecoat the brown with scorched brown rather than khemri and then just paint over the brown to get the lining... With your base colours, colour in the pattern again, leaving a bit of the darkened colours showing, don't worry too much though. This provides a fuzzy dark line between the colours. Skip this if you didn't do the devlan mud wash. Drybrush gently with khaki and then bleached bone to highlight. Where it's a bit chalky glaze with your base colours to tone it down. I found this to mostly be on the green. Now mix about 50-50 thraka green and devlan mud washes, and do an all over wash. Don't let it pool too much. Finally drybrush up the bottom with some muddy brown colour (I used VMC 147 leather brown). Last edited by Winterdyne : 4th Feb 10 at 4:26 PM. |

Brilliant, thanks mate. I can totally see the 6's now that you mentioned how you did is, unreal! Jotting those notes down now.
Group shot looks terrific, you really did justice to this simple group of recruits. And might I say that those are some snazzy looking Trench Works bases you have there! Whereever did you get them, (teeheehee). |
