Picky badge recognition?!

I first noticed this in the demo, and it seems to have slipped into the retail version as well: the game 'sees' some custom badges and not others - even though all of them are created using the same steps to the proper file specifications. Quite strange, considering that all of the badges in question are recognized by Homeworld 2 (which uses the same specs). Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Should any of the devs be interested in testing this, let me know, and I can send you a set of the badges.

What's different about the ones that aren't seen? Are their filenames over a certain length? How big are they? Do they show up at all in the army painter?

To elaborate...

Of a given set of custom badges, some are 'seen' by the game - and are available in the army painter - and some are not. Example follows:

->Legend of the Five Rings faction badges
  • L5R - Crab
  • L5R - Crane
  • L5R - Dragon
  • L5R - Lion
  • L5R - Mantis
  • L5R - Naga
  • L5R - Scorpion
  • L5R - Shadowlands
  • L5R - Unicorn

Of which only the first three are 'recognized' by DoW and seen in the army painter. Surely it cannot be a length-of-filename issue, because things like 'biohazard thin white' from the HW2 badge packs work just fine.
