Install just exits on 'Publishing Information'
When I install the demo, I select a path (tried the default and a second one.) Then I agree to the terms and conditions and click install. And then when everything is installed and it gets to the status message 'Publishing Information' or something, the installer just exits. And it apparantly deletes all the things that it copied.
My computer specs are Atholon XP 64, 1024mb 3800ddr, sata 150 hdd, and a radeon 9800. Ohh, and I just installed service pack 2 and it might be the problem as well. Martin |

SP2 is unlikely to be the problem.
There is another fellow who's having the same issue, and he's reported he can play the game if he goes to find the executable in the install directory, but his Entries are not there in the registry. It would be nice to find out what's causing this issue, as it's likely a problem with the installer (obviously). Perhaps Installshield's got something on their site. http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=37800 |

Yeah, I did read his post first. But he has the full version and he actually gets the folder. I on the other hand get the folder, and even the entry in the Start/Programs/THQ/Dawn Of War. But as soon as the installer reaches 'Publishing Information' those things are removed so I am unable to locate the exe.
Anyway, thanx for the timely response. Sure scores good points toward me purchasing the game even without trying the demo ![]() |

The exe should be where you did the installation too... the default is c:\program files\THQ\Dawn of War\
What operating System are you running? Can you post a log file from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt please? |

I doubt that it's actually SP2 causing the problem, as there are a LOT of people installing it on SP2. I suspect it's a problem with Windows Installer, specifically something from Installshield.
Again, please contact THQ to ensure they know about the issue. |

This is a Windows XP SP2 Installer bug. I also have the same problem. If you uninstall SP2, install works fine. I haven't found a solution yet :-/. I have the problem with the demo and also with the complete game. Some other appz/games sometimes have the same problem.

The demo installer had a problem with SP2, in that it took upwards of 20 minutes to install. The Retail version did not have that problem.
I seriously doubt this is a SP2 problem, as, again, A LOT of people are installing it on SP2 with no problems. |

-> Publishing Information -> Back to Desktop -> installation-folder is gone or empty.
Well for me it work fine to uninstall SP2. Doom III, the w40k DoW-Demo, DoW-Full and Nvidia System Manager all had the same problem with SP2 and on MY system. Some other guys have the same problem. Also with doom III, so why not posting my solution for it? |

I'm not saying your workaround isn't viable, just that I don't think SP2 is the root cause of the issue. It may be a factor, but I doubt that it's the actual problem.
It's probably an install shield issue. |

Posibility
If uninstalling service pack 2 works, then the issue and the sevice pack must be related.
I have the same problem, the installer tackes a few minutes to configure the windows installer (a known issue with the demo on all systems) and then it appears to work fine, after choosing an install directory and choosing a place in the start menu to have a shortcut, the installer proceeds to copy files into the target directory. The progress bar reaches the end and the installer just loses, no prompt, no error message nothing. You can monitor the directory it is installing to in windows explorer, the directory/ies appear, files appear as the installation progress bar moves along, then you can watch them all dissapear, right before your eyes as the installer dissappears into thin air. I have successfully installed the demo on an XP Professional PC with SP2, the demo works fine on that PC. On my XP Home PC with SP2, the issue described above prevents me from shooting up some Orks, Booo!! From what I know and have seen, the problem is XP Home AND SP2 Here's that log ÜberJumper was interested in http://www.themunkeh.co.uk/logs/hijackthis.log |

Can you just copy and paste the contents to here for that file please? It's not wrapping properly.
Question for you, on your XP Pro machine and XP Home machine, did you have the firewall disabled on either of them? |

I am having the exact same problem. I'm not using the XP firewall, but I am using eTrusts firewall. I tried turning it off then reinstalling, I tried installing to different directories, I've updated everything, tried rolling back drivers, etc. I am running WIndows XP Professional SP2.
The only thing that shows up is a registry key with the CD-Key. I downloaded the Windows Install clean-up tool from Microsoft and it does show a Dawn of War entry. Removing it doesn't do anything though. I have contacted THQ support but I doubt I will hear back anytime soon. |

I am using XP Pro
I think that what ÜberJumper is saying is correct about it beign an install shield issue, however the issue probably comes with an install shield update in SP2 Also... When the installer works properly, an insert CD dialogue appears just after the 'Publishing Information' stage. I noticed that this was different to the other insert CD dialogues, perhaps this dialogue is the problem. Then again mabie not |

I am experiencing this same problem (Install quits during 3rd disk, at “Publishing Information”) and found a solution that allows me to play. It works for me so I thought I’d pass it on.
Temporary work around This will keep the files from being deleted when the Install quits. Step 1 – Start the Install Step 2 – In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory you indicated for the Install Example: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War Step 3 – Open the Properties for the “Dawn of War” directory (Right-Click the Folder and select Properties. Step 4 – Check the Read-only box and Apply the change when the Install reaches the “Publishing Information” dialog. (You need to act fast.) Step 5 – The game can then be launched and played from the .exe or a short-cut can be created to it. |

That's what I get for reading threads when I'm tired... "I don't see XP home there anywhere, but he does mention SP2..."
Anyway, thanks for confirming, good to know that it's not an XP Home + SP2 issue. Also, it's not install shield that comes in XP2, it's Windows Installer 3.0. Install Shield leverages windows installer. I posted a link in another thread for some command line switches that you can use against the msiexec.exe to install the msi package for DoW, however, I've not setup the steps myself. |

Hi Uber, I tired installing using some command-line switches to generate a detailed log from msiexec and/or setup but had no luck. I wasn't able to launch the .msi without going through the InstallShield setup.exe and InstallShield didn't let me pass the log switches to msiexec. Maybe I was missing something? Do have an example? (I thought it should be something like: H:\setup.exe /f2"C:\DOWSetup.log" /V /I dawnofwar.msi /L C:\DOWmsi.log |

No, you'd need to try and extract the contents of the setup cab files, which should contain an .msi file.
It'd then be something like msiexec /f2"C:\Dowsetup.log" /V /I dawnofwar.msi /L C:\Dowmsi.log (or whatever the syntax is I mentioned the other day) Double Post Here's that URL I was referring too. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...ine_options.asp |

Here is the oh-so-usefull response from THQ. It looks like the message wasn't even read and a generic template was sent back.
"Make sure you have a supported operating system and your computer hardware meets the requirements to run the game. Be sure you have all the latest drivers install and any other Critical updates for your computer from www.windowsupdate.com . You may also try to improve your computers performance by running tools such as scandisk and disk defragment. After completing the updates and scan disc, please try a "Clean" install of the game. You will want to install and run the game with nothing running in the background. Make sure all other applications are closed out of. Disable any anti-virus software or screen savers that may be running or enabled. Now install/run the program. If more assistance is needed after trying all of the above steps, please supply more system information to us, from your Windows Desktop go to "START" and click on "RUN". In the open dialog box, type: DXDIAG This will run the DirectX diagnostic tool. Click on "Save All Information" button and save the text file onto your desktop. Now open the file into Word or a note pad and highlight the entire document. Copy the text (CTRL + C) and Paste it (CTRL + V) onto your reply to this e-mail. Be sure you include this entire e-mail so we can better help you. Make sure you keep all previous emails in tact and do not send attachments. We are not able to read attachments. Thank you again for your interest in THQ games. " |

Oh my god, I can't believe nobody has fixed this error... it IS a problem with SP2 and Installshield, most specifically Installshield. Some idiot at IS didn't bother to test compatability with SP2 in their latest installer package, and there is a critical bug that crashes the installer because a variable has changed in SP2 somewhere. The EXACT same thing happened in the Demo, and with Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Doom3, as well as I'm sure a lot of other new games released just after SP2.
The original thread and workaround for the demo was in the Demo Feedback forum here: http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=36160 I am VERY annoyed. |

Anytime UJ...
Incidentally, the workaround Zim posted for the demo, works for the retail version as well... so if any of you refuse to remove SP2 because Installshield can't get their act together, this will let you play the game. It would probably work for most Installshield installers that fail, actually. Call of Duty: United Offensive had the workaround to just install the files from the CD directly to the game folder, but that's an expansion pack, so it's not as complicated. Anyway, thanks again to Invader Zim for this fix. I hope Installshield pulls their head out of their butts and fixes this soon, it's been weeks now. Mac: No idea really, I'm just a tech, not a programmer, I'm just going off what Zim said in the post in my other thread, he seemed to know what he was talking about. But it does seem that if the issue comes up for you, it affects pretty much any game that uses Installshield. I've checked their website but I don't see much there, but it seems more aimed at developers not us helpless customers. |

It's more of a problem that came up with installshield after SP2 went live. There's likely something that installshield was relying on being there for Windows Installer 2.0, but when 3.0 came out with XPSP2, it looks like they might not be getting the right info fired back to them.
