[DoW] [WA] Direct Connect, Gamespy NAT bug.

I did not create this guide, but I was asked to post the workaround information so that Relic can look into this issue. Thank you to whomever made this guide.

Just a little visual aid to the EvilLlama’s work-around of the NAT/router problems over direct connect. NOTE: these instructions only work if you’re real IP address is numerically lower value than 192.168.1.X, refer to the page 5 of this document.
Step 1:Control Panel>Network Connections> double click the network card.
STEP 1:

STEP 2:

Step3: If there was any previous setting present please note them down.

Step4: Click ok for the currently open window and ok for the previous window to come back to the picture in step 1, then click the “support” tab.

Step5: Then go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and note down the IP address. If the internet doesn’t work anymore, go through the steps again except step 3, click “Obtain my IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” or restore them to whatever setting was previously present. Stop after step 4. The reason why this is not working for you is because you have not set the router to allow people to manually assign IP addresses, since router’s configuration pages are different, I don’t have time to go through them all and paste them all here… search online and see if you can’t find a tutorial or how-to on allowing computers to set their own IP addresses.

Step6: Follow steps 1 and 2 again until you get this dialogue again-

STEP 7:

STEP 8:

Step 9: click ok until you’re back at the setting menu shown in step 4, then click repair.

Now, you should be all set. Good luck DoWing using direct connect.

IMPORTANT NOTE: EvilLlama has made it clear to me that there are some problems with these instructions. The way DoW is programmed is it will send out the IP address with the lowest numerical value. The current problem is that routers in DoW are sending out their local network address (eg. 192.168.1.2) instead of their real internet IP address. When the other clients try to contact 192.168.1.2, they will find that they cannot connect to it because it is not a valid internet IP address and thus the connection will fail. The workaround works because you are adding the your real IP address as the second IP address on your Network card and DoW will send that instead, thus sending out your real IP address, however, there is a problem.
Say my internet IP address was: 138.124.43.26 and my LAN IP address was 192.168.1.1
In this instance the work around would work because DoW will pick the lower of the two values to send (138.124.43.26) which also happens to be my real IP address.
However, if my internet IP address is 203.134.24.23 and my LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1
It wouldn’t work because DoW would pick 192.168.1.1 because it’s the lower value but 192.168.1.1 is not your real internet IP address and consequently the direct IP will still fail.
So what do I do now?
Well, EvilLlama suggests that you change your LAN network’s IP to the 222.222.222.x range but that would require messing around with the DHCP settings of your router and because I am lazy and because there’s hundreds and thousands of router models out there each with a different configuration page, I cannot show you how to do this here. If you know how to do it, then it should be no problem but if you don’t… well, keep your fingers cross for the next patch.
I’m sorry but that’s the best I can do.
