The Salmon of Doubt

A little while (a couple of weeks) ago I finished the book 'The Salmon of Doubt'. It is a compilation of many things found on the now deceased Douglas Adam's computers and the beginning of a new novel he was writing. If you have read the Hitchhikers series or Dirk Gently series READ THIS BOOK. Douglas Adams was a brilliant author who didn't deserve to die at such a young age. This book is actually quite depressing because teh beginning of the novel Adams was beginning ends so abruptly just like his life did. If you have read this book or want to just say something about Adams or one of the books from his other series feel free to do so.

Adams was and still is my favorite author. Whaat do you think of him?

Yeah, I concur. Adams was a genial writer. Hit wit and the "matter of fact" writing style of Hitcherhikers was an absolute dream for me. Although the philistine that I am, I have only read Hitchhikers.

Anyway....... "So long and thanks for all the fish" is still one of the funniest things I have ever read in that book, or any fiction for that matter. Man the amount of times myself and friends have laughed at that one while discussing Adams' work. He is like the Monty Python of the litiery (sp) world.

douglas adams is an ok writer. a bit silly, and some of his humour falls totally flat, but generally ok. i think a modern film deserves to be made of hitchikers; i read them only a few months ago and i remember observing all the way through the terrific imagery that could be turned into the best surreal film for years, a real feast for the eyes.

i havent read mostly harmless or salmon of doubt yet; salmon wasnt in the bookshop and ill buy them together when it is.

There was a movie made about the first two Hitchhiker books (it was 4 hours long) but I fell asleep after teh first hour cause i was watching it after being awake for 36 hours. It was a made a while ago though so it was rather odd. Marvin had those weird arms all robots back then had. I believe there was a Dirk Gently movie in the making when Adams died. I hope it gets finished. The Gently series would make some great movies. Has anyone read The Meaning of Liff? It's a dictionary of many words that mean things we don't have words for yet (like the feeling you get on monday mornings when you have woken up late) by Adams and another Author. It was pretty odd.

HHGTTG = win

That's all I can say on the matter. It'd be interesting to see what, say, Spielberg would do with it... could be a good movie series.

Hmmm....Spielberg......hmmmmmm.....

Well AI was dissapointing (to say the least (goddamn sexbot)) but Minority Report was amazingly awesome.

That would be interesting.

Spielberg for Hitchhikers? no no no, NO.

I think Terry Gilliam, Spike Jonze, Sam Mendes, Tim Burton... the source material's just too good to risk to anyone else. Spielberg's track record with comedy isn't too great...

Definately Terry Gilliam. He's one of the few that could handle both the grand scenery and the humor of hhgttg. It would require some computer animation though, wonder how good he is handling that...
