Gretchins?

I remeber since the second ediction that gretchin were armed with autoguns and fought 'en mass. Like for every ten orks you'd have twenty gretchin. Did I miss something in the third edition? That before they were just mass shots and meat sheilds. I just noticed how weak they made DOW gretchins. Anyone else have that thought?

The ork builder unit is the Grot :P Which I think is closer to a snotling than a Gretchin. It's certainly much runtier, and looks a lot like the grots in DoW.

Gretchin Mobz, in the 3rd edition, are armed with Grot blasters, are utter crap, and again I believe they're closer to snotlings than Gretchin. (I think the "space Goblin" has been basically taken out of the game, replaced with the "space snotling"). Maybe the Gretchin are off being cunning and the Snotlings, tired of being treated like food, decided to tell the Orks they were Gretchin :P the Orks believed them since all the middle sized gretchin disappeared, besides, "Dem' Runtier Orks keep getting' smallar."

DoW is based off of WH40k, it's not a direct transfer into an RTS.

grots have always been pretty weak in all respects so thats why they are weak in dow. in 3rd ed they were always used as meatshields if used at all

I was always under the impression that gretchin and grots were basically the same, runty little orks.

I would imagine that gretchin werent included as lots of huge squads of cannon fodder capable of causing real damage for two reasons. Firstly, it would mean a lot more units on screen which would hurt performance and also hinder pathfinding. Secondly, it would make it a lot harder to outnumber orks in terms of number of squads.

There was a thread back in the BETA days when someone made a joke "buff" thread (MusedMark, I think?) that the Grots should be buffed, with lascannons and power klaws.

Gretchin and Grotz are the same thing, foo. Get an Ork Codex and stop saying silly things.

Oh, and also, while Grotz do tend to outnumber Orks (ie: Grot City, a fabled little town on a backwater planet), there are also instances in which Orks outnumber Grotz. It's usually just a matter of how much fighting they get to do, and their surroundings. If there is little/no food, and almost no one to fight except eachother, over generations the Orks will literally "phase out" and give way to Grotz who are far better adapted to their situation.

On the frontlines of a major war, however, Grotz aren't going to be nearly as numerous.

So yes, DoW does work fluff-wise.

GRetchins + snOTlings = GROTS.

Somewhere along the line, someone just got lazy and smashed the two together.

In TT there used to be a weapon based on teleporting snotlings at the enemy. (Very useful against termies and dreadnaughts since they'd end up materializing in the unit and killing or damaging it severely)

Im just happy that i inspired the naked sporker thread!!!

Anyway, im pretty sure that gretchins have a better use than most builders, free re-inforce, cloak, they can tie sqauds up, they sound funny etc

Though i still maintain that Gretchin Mech Units are the way forward..

PS, TBS, glad you made it into the elite of the forum, mods aside, your one of the few people who i enjoy reading posts by. Nice work man

The weapon you are refering too is the Shokk Kannon, which threw Snotlings through the warp at 'oomies, and which I want in DoW, but as apparently Snotz have been removed from the Third Edition rules (and my "Waaagh The Orks!" book, and the badge and banner based upon it's Orky Dikshunary is now obselete :argh: ) the chances of seeing it in game are approximately zero.

In Waaagh btw, the word "Grotz" was for Gretchin only. "Runtz" was both. Runtzherds have been replaced with Slavedriverz now, I gather...

Thanks Titler, the name of that unit has been bugging me something fierce. I know it'll never make it, but the kill animation would be neat. A bunch of little green limbs waving from the joints and seams of a termie, dreadnaught(WG, KK, whatever), or tank. Soldiers just become a red and green mess.

Sort of like an artillery piece that either kills outright or ties up the enemy unit in CC for a moment or two while they squish the snots...

As an asside... I find that offensive in a strange sort of way. The essence of orcs was always their comedic value, the real nastiness was left to the oomans.

Grots where never slaves, they where just smaller and vus subject to abuse. Slavery seems counter to the ork mind in a strange way. Bah taking things too seriously again. But... stilll :P

However I dont mourn the loss of snottlings. they where always silly, as long as they dont make gretchlins stupid. Their great virtue was always their malevolent inteligence.

They've tried to make the universe much darker in 3rd and 4th Ed. Comedy value stuff was chucked and Orks are now funny in a black way more than anything else.

Thank goodness for that. I've noticed something not right about his account though. He's registerd as "Guest" Must be either banned or account has been disabled by the moderator. (can that be done, or only the user can disable his own account?)

Maybe a mod deleted his account, I'm not sure. Nevertheless, good riddance to him I say. :bandit:

On topic: Grethins MUST have their own kill animations. I wanna see a Grethchin squad crawl into a Bloodthirsters ear and start hacking his brains away!
